Focus Point

April showers or April floods?

“Noah sent out the dove from the ark and it came back in the
Evening with a freshly plucked olive leaf.
So Noah knew that the waters had subsided from the earth.”
Genesis 8:11

We, as human beings, on planet earth now realize that our carbon footprint has a local and global impact on the earth's sustainability. We live in a modern age where the decisions which we make in our daily lives have such an impact on the earth.  For example, our decision to purchase beef from Brazil or from a local farmers' market has a profound effect on the 'food miles' which are used for our ultimate consumption of the product. We as individuals have important choices to make about the future of this planet. Building sustainable communities may help us to save that future.

A Christian view - The role of humanity

Regarding human beings as the most important beings in creation has the unfortunate effect on both the earth and humanity itself. The human species, as a result, can be seen as irrelevant at best, and at worst a terrible calamity for life on earth, a rogue species of rapacious bipeds bent on destruction. What then is the proper place of humanity on the planet? The bible offers three roles: prophets, priests and Kings.

A prophet is a seer: one who perceives things as they truly are, that is, shown by God, and who speaks of what he or she sees. It is a prophetic role to speak of the beauty and goodness of the creation; to make people see things as they really are; and to free the earth (in this context) from the oppression of exploitation, ignorance and plunder.

A priest is primarily active. This role encourages people to use the earthly gifts of God rightly. The role encourages human beings to realize their potential as communicators of God's reality. Human beings should transform nature with the understanding that it is a gift from God and when it has been transformed it should be offered back to God. Christ is the supreme exemplar of the priestly role as he bridges the gap between the relationship between Man and God.

Kingship is the third role for human beings. The servant - king defends the rights of the poor and disadvantaged. Kingship also implies dominion. However a wrong understanding of dominion over the earth has had devastating consequences. Dominion is an exercise of vicegerency: Lordship under God.

What is your contribution to the sustainability of our planet?

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting for the Parish of St John’s Tisbury will be held in the Hinton Hall following a slightly shortened Parish Communion on Sunday 13th April.  Come to the Eucharist and pray for the life of the parish and stay on to learn more of its life and activities and how you can become involved in these.  Copies of the Annual Report and Accounts will be available in church in the weeks leading up to the Meeting.

 Swallowcliffe Annual Parochial Church Meeting

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting of St. Peter’s Church, Swallowcliffe will be held on Tuesday 22nd April in the Village Hall at 7.30pm

SATURDAY  PRAYER

It may not be widely known that an ecumenical group meets every Saturday morning from 8 - 8.30 in the Hinton Hall (excepting the 2nd Saturday of the month when we meet in the Methodist Church). Clive Fairclough was the initiator of this group.

Our purpose is to pray for the Sunday services in the three Tisbury churches and throughout the Nadder Valley Team. We pray for clergy and lay ministers, and for all who lead in worship in any capacity and, of course, for the worshippers.

We try to include the major needs of our local community, and national or inter- national events as they arise. Our special concern at the moment is for the appointment of a new Team Rector.

We would be delighted if you could join us.
   PB

Almighty and everlasting God
We pray for the churches of the Nadder Valley
and for all who live, work or worship here.
Open our eyes, that we may see your presence about us.
Inspire our minds, and enlarge our vision for your church.
Give wisdom and discernment in the appointment of a new team rector,
That now, and in the future we may:
Serve you in unity,
bear witness to your truth,
and forward your purposes for all people
with courage, trusting in your power,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  Amen

THE BLOG FROM THE AREA BISHOP'S OFFICE

We hope that this will provide an informal way of keeping in touch and we aim to put on the blog some of the events we are involved in, news from across the Ramsbury area, book reviews and anything else that might be of interest.  There is space for comment and pages where we can put useful information.  We plan to update the blog at least two or three times a week.

        Nadder Valley Church Singers

The Nadder Valley Church Singers is drawn from churches in the two of the Nadder Valley Team groups - East & South. The Choir itself will be, hopefully, a full 4-part adult choir, able to quickly absorb church music on a short rehearsal cycle and sometimes even at sight.

The choir will predominately sing choral evensong at any of the 10 churches. The repertoire will be put together to accommodate the various churches, particularly with reference to the state of certain organs i.e., providing for acappella singing for the majority of a service if needed.

If you are interested in joining please contact Nigel Kenyon.  All voices are welcome although we need tenors, particularly.

Holy Week - Tuesday 18th March 2008

Edited by Revd Rob Marshall and Owen Edwards

A MOMENT OF REFLECTION: for HOLY WEEK

Loving Lord, many of your disciples today weep in heart if not tears as they look over the city from the place where you wept over it , as they follow the way of the cross and stand at the traditional place where you were crucified , and weep as they remember your broken body being taken down from the cross. George Appleton (The Way of a Disciple)

Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom, acted upon it, called disciples to help preach it, explained it in parables and other catechetical sayings, and disputed its meaning with those with whom he disagreed. The confrontational aspect of his message, in which the kingdom was a basic element, brought him into such conflict with the religious and secular authorities of his day that he was finally crucified. With the terrible clarity that the resurrection account convey, his followers came to believe after his death that the man and his message had been vindicated by God, that Jesus had lived and died for a truth no power on earth could destroy. Bruce Chilton (The Kingdom of God)

In an age of change and uncertainty, people ask profound questions, about life itself, about suffering, about death, about love and what makes life worthwhile. People seek assurance and light. Basil Hume (A Turning to God)

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK

Archbishop Rowan has asked Christians to remember that the first Sunday of Christian Aid Week falls on Pentecost this year. For more than 60 years Christian Aid Week has been a sign of the Church communicating globally. The collection itself raises millions, helping churches from India to Brazil.

EDINGTON SLEEP-IN REPORT

Well over 3,000 was raised for the Alabare Christian Care Centres by the 32 people who slept-in at Edington Priory Church on the night of February 29th. They came from every parish in the benefice of Bratton & Edington, Erlestoke & Coulston, and some from beyond including, unexpectedly, Andrew Lord, Chief Executive of Alabar. Aged from 12 to 83, the view of all concerned was that it had been a night to remember. All, especially the 9 teenagers taking part, had been overwhelmed by the beauty of the church, illuminated only by its two tabernacle lamps and with human noises inside drowned by the roaring of the wind outside.

BOOK REVIEW

Ratzingers Faith

Tracey Rowland

The Theology of Pope Benedict XVI

Oxford University Press 12.99

Because of Joseph Ratzingers crucial role in the Vatican before his election as successor to Pope John Paul II, this book greatly assists us in unravelling how the Cardinal was able to move smoothly and without any great sense of effort to the throne of St.Peter. It also helps us if we want to know more there are many references to where we might go if we want to explore further. Rowland is Dean and Associate Professor of Political Philosophy and Continental Theology of the John Paul II Institute in Melbourne, Australia and the book proclaims itself as The first substantial assessment of Pope Benedict XVIs theological vision.

The book is well written with a concise sense of conviction and focus. It looks at revelation, scripture and tradition as well as exploring liturgical issues and the nature of communion. The Subiaco and Regensburg addresses, delivered by the Pope, are appended in full.

This book is an excellent resource for all those concerned about unity and authority. Urging Christians to stick to the truth as revealed in Jesus, Rowland suggests that Ratzinger sees the Church as the vehicle by which the truth is revealed: He is critical of interpretations which would transform Christianity into what he provocatively calls a poorly managed haberdashery that is always trying to lure more customers.
